Arthur Stanislaus Baker July 11, 1931 - May 23, 2024 Arthur Stanislaus Baker, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2024. Born to Stanley and Clara (nee Piotrowski) in Detroit, MI, on July 11, 1931, Arthur was known for his sharp wit, humor, and unwavering dedication to family. Arthur proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War, an experience he often recounted, particularly the 30-day voyage from Korea on the USS Howze (aka the “Lousy Howzy”), fighting alongside the Turkish Brigade, and playing for the unit’s baseball team. His stories and songs sung during his time spent in the war have been recounted by him many times. A passionate sports fan, Arthur enjoyed cheering on the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. His love for sports extended to his community, where he spent countless hours teaching and playing sports with his children, grandchildren, and neighborhood kids. Known for creating a winter skating pond at Anthony Park and providing a space for play at the local parks, Arthur’s enthusiasm for sports was passed on to numerous generations. Arthur's backyard was legendary, hosting numerous family gatherings, pick up baseball games, and spirited late-night card games with friends and family. His pride in his home, lawn, and garden was evident to all who knew him. Arthur was preceded in death by his first wife Betty (nee Conant), his second wife, Sylvia (nee Pawlos), and his daughter Michelle (Frank) Noonan. He is survived by his loving children, Cynthia (John) Eckenrode, Mark (Julie) Baker, Daniel (Lisa) Baker, and Julie (Victor) Rosinski. Cherished Papa of Jason Tyranski, Brandon Baker, Laura Tyranski, Christopher Noonan, Jordan Baker, Bryan Noonan, Marina Baker, Casey Baker, Benn Baker, Abigail Rosinski, Matthew Eckenrode, Aidan Rosinski, and Kathryn Eckenrode. He was also the proud great-grandfather of 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30th, from 4:00-7:00 pm with a Scripture Service at 7:00 pm at Stanley Turowski Funeral Home, 25509 W. Warren, Dearborn Heights. Arthur will lie in state on Friday, May 31st, at 10:30 am at St. Sabina Church, 25555 Ann Arbor Trail, Dearborn Heights, until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Burial will take place following Mass at St. Hedwig Cemetery at 12:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Michigan Humane Society, reflecting Arthur's love for his dogs (the many Shane’s).
