Darryl David Flesher

March 3, 1937 – April 23, 2025

Darryl David Flesher, born March 3, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Reginald and Pauline (née Driver) Flesher, passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2025, at the age of 88.

A pioneer in the world of automotive customization, Darryl was one of the original innovators of custom paint jobs for cars. His work left a permanent mark on the industry, including his contribution to the Kennedy Presidential Limousine—now displayed at the Henry Ford Museum in Greenfield Village. He was the inventor of metal flake paint, and developed a spray system that allowed for even distribution, revolutionizing custom car aesthetics.

Darryl’s career included time with some of the most iconic names in custom automotive design. He worked with the famed Alexander Brothers, creators of many of the most influential custom cars of the 1960s, and with Clarkaiser Custom Shop in Detroit—run by legendary postwar car customizers Ron Clark and Bob Kaiser. He also lent his talents to American Sunroof Corporation, helping to shape an era of American car culture.

Beyond his professional legacy, Darryl was a devoted movie buff who loved classic black and white films, especially those shown on Turner Classic Movies. He found joy in the simple pleasures of storytelling and nostalgia.

He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara, and a loving father to Jeff (Cindy), Krista (Steve), Paula, and the late Matthew. He was a cherished grandfather to Matthew, Melanie, Amanda, Caitlin, Stephanie, Jessica, Brad, and Brittany, and a proud great-grandfather to Marilyn, Ben, Kaydence, and River. Darryl is also survived by his dear sister, Judy Renore.

In accordance with Darryl’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation. His legacy will live on in every car he touched and every life he enriched with his kindness, creativity, and passion.
