David Michael Popeney
July 12, 1978 - November 9, 2024
David Michael Popeney, 46, of Dearborn, MI, suddenly passed away on November 9, 2024. Born in Southfield, MI, on July 12, 1978, David embodied the spirit of family, generosity, and adventure. Known for his big heart and infectious energy, he was the quintessential "fun uncle," forever creating memories and making life special for his beloved nieces, Reagan, Sydney, Mackenzie, and Olivia.
David found endless joy in spoiling his nieces, whether it was taking them to see Frozen the Musical, decking out his Jeep for off-road adventures, or going all out for their birthdays. One of his signature gestures was his snow cone machine, stocked with every flavor imaginable, a sweet symbol of how he went above and beyond to bring happiness into their lives.
A sports enthusiast, David loved cheering on the Detroit Tigers and Michigan State Spartans, sharing his passion for the game with family and friends. After the passing of his father, David learned to play guitar as a tribute to him, embracing music as a heartfelt expression of his love and remembrance for his dad’s musical skills.
David was also an avid reader and a devoted dog lover. His two dogs, Teddy and Millie, were his constant companions and a big part of his heart. His love for animals extended into the community, where he volunteered at Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, offering his time and compassion to those animals in need.
David is survived by his loving mother, Sandi; his devoted brothers, Michael (Jenn) and Brian (April); and his cherished nieces, Reagan, Sydney, Mackenzie, and Olivia. He is predeceased by his father, David, and his mother, Jane. He was the dear grandson of Shirley and the late Jerry Burns and the late Bob and Elaine Schramke, and the late Chuck and Rita Popeney. His legacy lives on in the laughter, love, and warmth he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 pm, with a Scripture Service at 7:00 pm, at Stanley Turowski Funeral Home, 25509 West Warren, Dearborn Heights. On Saturday, an instate period will begin at 9:30 am at the Church of the Divine Child, 1055 North Silvery Lane, Dearborn, until the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit , honoring David's deep love for animals and his commitment to their care.
