Irene Stella Dewicki

June 26, 1926 — August 5, 2021

Irene (Mazur) Dewicki entered eternal life on August 5, 2021, when God called her by name. Irene was born with the help of a mid-wife on Detroit’s West Side in a largely Polish neighborhood. She was baptized at St. Andrew’s and attended St. Cunegunda’s Church and Grade School which was just up the street. Irene graduated from Chadsey High School in 1943; received her BS in Education from Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) and obtained her teaching certificate through Wayne State University. She taught Natural Science in the Detroit Public School System. Doing her part for the war effort, Irene worked for Cadillac Motor Company on the midnight shift grinding aircraft crankshafts for the Allison engine used in P-38 Lightning, P-39 Airacobra, P-40 Warhawks, the P-51 Mustang, and the P-63 Kingcobra. She met her future husband at a picnic sponsored by Laur, a Polish Dance Troupe, and on July 22, 1950, she married Zdzislaw Dewicki at St. Cunegunda’s in Detroit. Irene is survived by her husband of 71 years, Zdzislaw (Jerry), and her children: Paul (Mary), Barbara (Frank) Bechard, Dianne (Walt) Kreucher, Beth Anne (Michael) Telega, Terry, Donald, and Nancy (Brian) Campbell. She is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving Irene are her sister Stephanie Radwan, her brothers, Mitchell Mazur, and Bernard (Joan) Mazur. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Marja and Ignatz Mazur, sisters Zofia Mazur and Adele Czapski, her brothers-in-law Richard Czapski and Edward Radwan, her sister-in-law Ann Mazur, and two grandchildren; Heather Elizabeth Telega and AnnMarie Irene Campbell. Visitation Sunday 2:00-8:00 pm with Rosary at 4:00 pm Stanley Turowski Funeral Home, 25509 W. Warren, Dearborn Heights. Instate Monday 10:00 am at the Church of the Divine Child, 1055 Silvery Lane, Dearborn, until the time of Mass at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, Irene's family suggests memorial donations to VA Ann Arbor Fisher House, which builds comfort homes where military & veterans families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital, The Church of the Divine Child, or PRCU ‘Our lives are but a single breath, we flower and we fade, yet all our days are in your hands, so we return in love what love has made.’
