Jack Paul Mattieson

July 23, 1935 — December 14, 2023

Jack Mattieson (died December 14, 2023), was raised in Dearborn, MI and graduated from Dearborn High School (Class of 1953). After a year at the University of Miami, Jack went to Northland College in Ashland, WI. While at Northland, he was an outstanding defenseman on the Northland Hockey team for three seasons from 1956-1959, while simultaneously playing with the Ironwood Jets in the Northern Michigan-Wisconsin League where he earned league All Star honors. He served as team captain all three years and had the distinction of playing all 60 minutes in a game during the 1957-58 season. After graduating from Northland, Jack went on to play minor league hockey. Jack was later named to the Northland Hockey Hall of Fame, both for his contributions to their hockey program while himself a student athlete, and then for his work to restart that program in the 1990s. Jack had a successful career as a securities trader in Detroit. During his career he worked with three New York Stock Exchange firms as either a partner or vice president, and pioneered the method used for market-making in the trading of inactive securities. He served as President of the Board of Directors for the Securities Traders Association of Detroit and on the National Association of Security Dealers arbitration and enforcement committees. Jack Married Georgiana in 1970. They were very happily married and his passing came just a few days short of their 53rd wedding anniversary. Besides fishing with his son and watching his daughter, an equestrian and dressage rider, work with her horses, Jack’s greatest joy was coaching hockey, and he coached many local boys’ teams and a women’s team. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul, sister Patricia, and nephew, Scott. He is survived by his widow, Georgiana, his children, Mace and Chiara, his sister-in-law Linda and his Godchildren, Lisa (Prokop) McAllister and Stephen Mattieson, a niece and several nephews. He is also survived by Niki (Paul) McInchak and J.T. McInchak, who Jack and Georgi consider their second daughter and grandson, respectively. Memorial donations may be sent to Angela Hospice (14100 Newburgh Rd., Livonia, MI 48154), who made Jack’s passing gentle and peaceful. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held sometime in 2024.
