Lt. Colonel Lois Harvey August 29, 1940 – October 31, 2025
Lt. Colonel Lois Harvey was Promoted to Glory on October 31, 2025, where her family gathered around her to pray, read scripture, sing her favorite Gaither songs, and reminisce about her being a loving and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and Salvation Army officer.
Lois was born on August 29, 1940, in Calumet, Michigan, to Rueben and Dorothy Kumpula. She was the second child in the family of four children with Carl being the oldest, William born after her, and Dorothy being the youngest. After the family moved from Calumet to Detroit in 1940, they were faithful soldiers at the Brightmoor Corps where Dorothy, her mother, was the organist and pianist. Lois followed in her footsteps, becoming the corps’ pianist and participating in the band. She accepted Jesus into her heart during summer camp at Echo Grove Camp. Her nick name was “Dolly”, and she was known for her smiles, giggles, and laugh.
Lois met and fell in love with Clarence at the Brightmoor Corps and they were married on February 7, 1959, welcoming Rae Lynn to their family later that year. Feeling a calling on their lives to full time service, they applied to enter the School for Officers’ Training as part of the Great Hearts session being commissioned in 1960. Their corps commands included Moberly, St. Louis Maplewood, (where David was born) and Detroit Grandale. In 1968, they became the divisional youth leaders in the Western Division where Scott was born. In 1971 they were appointed to the Northern Illinois Division as divisional youth leaders. Later, their appointment became the Chicago Harbor Light Center. Lois held the major responsibility as assistant home league secretary to provide leadership to women’s ministries in the inner-city area. They also held divisional appointments in the Midland and Eastern Michigan Divisions until they were made divisional leaders of the Kansas & Western Missouri Division. From Kansas, they returned to their home division of Eastern Michigan as divisional leaders. Lois provided great leadership to women’s ministries and women’s auxiliaries. They finished their careers at Territorial Headquarters (1993) and National Headquarters (1994) retiring in 1996. The Harveys enjoyed their lovely home in Houghton Lake, Michigan, where they attended the Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church.
During Lois’s ministry she was known for her beautiful piano playing which she was able to do even in her final year with Alzheimer’s. She was also passionate about Bible Studies. Lois spent her last three years at Rose Senior Living where she and Clarence moved in August 2022. They started worship services there where Lois played the piano and accompanied the choir. All the staff shared that she was their favorite as she was always positive and cheerful – giving everyone smiles, giggles, and laughs. In retirement, she continued to serve Jesus Christ as He called to witness and help others in need, until she was promoted to His glory
In all of Lois’s experiences, her greatest service and prayers were for her children Rae Lynn, David (Darlene), and Scott (Denise); her grandchildren Matthew, Tyler, Xavier, Taylor, Joshua (Kayla), Logan, Trent and the late Brandon; and great-grandchildren Ava, Mason, Noah, Addison, Oaklynn, and Wyatt. In addition, Lois is survived by her sister, Colonel Dorothy Smith (Jeff) and brother, Bill Kumpula (Darlus), as well as many nieces and nephews. Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy & Rueben Kumpula; her loving husband of 64 years, Clarence; her brother, Carl; and her grandson, Brandon.
The family of Lois Harvey would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Rose Senior Living Providence Park and Hospice of Michigan for the excellent care and compassion shown to their mother.
